Top sprinters ready to roll at World Champs.

The
25-year-old Campbell, who won the 100m and 200m in 10.89secs and
22.39secs respectively at the National Championships last month,
confirmed her plans with the Sunday Observer in an interview last week.
"Absolutely," she said. "My plan is to compete in both the 100m and the
200m at the World Championship in Osaka." Asked whether she had a
preference for any of the events, Campbell said, "I'm capable of
producing excellent times in both events. As a result, I don't have a
preference for either. My aim is to maximise my potential in both
sprints, so I treat them as two separate events and prepare for them as

The
curtain has been drawn on what must be the year when Jamaica’s athletes,
male and female, in tandem, rose to the highest pinnacle of achievement
ever, the entire fraternity, warming to and swollen by, some truly
classy performances. With a plethora of positives, the country looks,
this summer, in eager and salivating anticipation to the Japanese city
of Osaka. There, come August, the International Association of Athletic
Federations (IAAF) will stage its 11th edition of the
World Championships, the sports most prestigious undiluted stage. This
thought,, predicated on the fact that the occasion, contrary to what
will entail at the Beijing Olympics, the following year, will not have

The

COMMONWEALTH GAMES

China’s serious coaching resolve
Monday 30 October 2006
There
is no doubting the determination of the Chinese Athletics Association (CAA)
to advance their sport in the lead-up to the 2008 Olympic Games in
Beijing. After consulting many international coaches and athletes over
recent years, the most famous being World 200m and 400m record holder
Michael Johnson (USA), to help their technical development, the latest
to be signed up is 1976 Olympic 200m champion and 100m silver medallist
Don Quarrie from Jamaica.
Well, true to say Quarrie will be
returning to China, as the announcement last week that the 55-year-old,
with the approval of the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA),
had been invited by the CAA to assist the development of Chinese
sprinting, comes nearly a year after Quarrie made an initial 10 day trip
to a National Training Camp in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

The local-based MVP
sprint pair of Asafa Powell, the world’s 100m record holder, and Sherone
Simpson, were the impressive individuals.
Though he looked easy in the end, Powell had to
depend on his top-end speed to take him past Americans Leonard Scott,
who got a very good start, and the fast-finishing Tyson Gay in the men's
100 metres.
Powell admitted he
was lost at the start.

Congrats to the Jamaican Athletics Family
Monday,
September 4, 2006
September 4th, 2006
Mr. Howard Aris
President JAAA
Kingston, Jamaica
Dear Howard,
On behalf of the
CACAC and the CAC Athletics Family I would like to congratulate you and
the Jamaica Athletics Family for the fantastic results obtained by the
Jamaican junior athletes at the World Junior Championships. It was a
show of the development, the pride and the athletics tradition of a
great Nation.
Jamaica keeps
leading the region and I just hope that all our countries emulate the
fantastic development program and system that the JAAA has in place.
Those of us who were
present there felt very proud of being part of the CAC region,
therefore, my admiration and respect on behalf of the CACAC.
I take this
opportunity to extend my most sincere appreciation to the JAAA for you
continuous support for our organization.
Kind regards.
Sincerely,
Victor Lopez
For the second time in two months,
Asafa Powell, has equaled the world 100m mark of 9.77 seconds.
Sunday,
September 3, 2006
This was achieved at
the Zurich Grand Prix on August 18 in Switzerland, the third time he was
running that fast.
All the performances
have something in common. All came under under European conditions, the
first in Athens (June 14 2005), Gateshead (June 11) and the latest, last
week in Zurich (August 18).
He is the first man
to run a world record three times, and he was quick to point it out to
the world, hinting he is the best.
"I'm the only one who
has ever run 9.77 three times. I ran a world record three times," he
told journalists after the race.
However, at least one
question begs itself, does the buck stops there.
"If I'm going to
continue to run 9.77 for the rest of career it's not a bother to me," he
said. He, however, added: "One way or the other, there will come a time
when I run under 9.77," he said.

Change in Citizenship & Doping in Sports
Tuesday, August 22, 2006
Recent events relating
to Track and Field Athletics has forced me as Area Representative on the
IAAF Council to make some comments where the subject of change in
citizenship and doping in Sports is concerned.
Allow me to quote from our Council
meeting held in Doha on April 10, 2005:
“At a meeting in Doha on 10 April,
2005, Council agreed that IAAF Rule 5.2d, which relates to Changes of
Nationality, should be changed so that the period of ineligibility of an
athlete who had competed for one Member Federation and wanted to change
to another, would only begin when the athlete received citizenship.
