THE country's contingent of athletes and management staff left the island early Wednesday morning to attend the Senior CAC Championships which will be held in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico this weekend. The three day Championships will start on Friday at the same venue where the Senior CAC Games was held last year.
This will be very important Championships for several athletes who are hoping to cement their places on the team to participate at the World Championships next month in Daegu, Korea. Some of these athletes will be hoping to attain the "A" standard for the World Championships in Korea. Several of the top athletes from the other Caribbean countries will also be participating and some exciting battles are expected. On Friday's opening day it will all begin as the 100 metres and 400 metres finalsin both categories will be contested on that day. The opening day will also see competition in the Men's 10000 final as well as opening round action in the Women's and Men's 400 metres Hurdles along with competition in the Men's Decathlon. In the field events there will be Men's Discus and Women's Shot Put finals.
It will be very busy day for the 100 and 400 metres athletes as they will be competing in both the first round and finals of their events. In the morning session there will be first round of both Men's and Women's 400 metres. Taking the track for Jamaica in the Women's event 400 metres will be former Vere Technical athletes, Patricia Hall and Shereefa Lloyd. Newly crowned Men’s National 400 metres Champion, Riker Hylton the former St. Jago High star and a student at Louisianna State University (LSU), will be hoping to improve on his season’s best of 45.30 seconds and attain the World Championships "A" standard of 45.25 seconds in order to qualify for an individual slot in Daegu. He will be joined in the event by former Jamaica College quarter miler, Dewayne Barrett, who is based in New York. The morning session will also have the opening round of the Men's and Women's 400 metres hurdles. National champion Leford Green and Roxroy Cato will compete on the men’s side while Andrea Sutherland and Sheryl Morgan are the women who will compete for Jamaica.
In the afternoon session, Jura Levy, Simone Facey, Dexter Lee and Oshane Bailey will be competing in the 100 metres heats where they will be hoping to book their places for the finals to take place later in the evening.
